Rules - Sportsman 2008 Rules by Class

Safety Rules
1. Apparel – See General Rules
Tires: Hoosier 890 treaded

Weight

365 cubic inches or less = 3,100 lbs.

366-385 cubic inches = 3,200 lbs.

386 or larger = 3,300 lbs.

Any car that has the stock firewall and floor pan complete will be given a 50 lbs. weight break.

Any car with the motor seat back further than the rule allows with be required to carry not an extra 50 lbs., but 50 lbs in front of the flywheel. No further than 4”.

Any car running with a non factory steel roof will be required to weigh an extra 25 lbs.

Any car running a body that is more than 75% aluminum panels will be required to add an extra 25 lbs.

Any car running with a complete fiberglass body will be required to weigh an extra 100 lbs.

Any car that might not have a complete fiberglass body, weight penalties will be assessed by HS officials.

Any car with stock rear upper & lower trailing arms and no Panhard will be allowed 56% left side.

1. Maximum 55% left side weight.

2. May add weight boxes to the outside of the frame rails with safety bolts in the front and rear.

3. All weight must be painted white with car number on it.

4. No under slung chassis.

Competing Models
1. American made cars 1964 and up.
2. Minimum wheelbase of 106”.

Bodies
1. Full magnetic steel body. May use aftermarket front and rear bumper covers.
2. Fenders and quarter panels may be cut for tire clearance. Front inner fender panels may be removed.
3. All hoods, trunks, and rear hatches must be securely fastened. Doors must be welded closed. No under panning permitted.
4. Air cleaner must remain under hood.
5. Must have stock grill or screen mesh wire.
6. Minimum roof height 48”.
7. Maximum spoiler height 6” x 60” wide.
8. Minimum body clearance 4” to ground.
9. Must have full front lexan window 3/16 of inch minimum, side and rear windows 1/8 of inch minimum recommended.

Suspension
1. Front spindle/axle/ball joint assemblies may be reinforced, or heavier duty unit from another passenger car installed.
2. Frame may be reinforced. No notching or alteration to mainframe rails.
3. Any style sway bar other than a splined bar. Can run eye bolts on frame.
4. Wedge bolts permitted.
5. May run after market upper A-arms and upper A-frame mounts.
6. Lower control arms must be stock AND must be in stock location with no modification of any kind.
7. Steel non-adjustable, non-rebuildable shocks ONLY.
8. Minimum frame height is 6 inches.
9. May run front loop bar tied to cage with one bar in front of A-arm.
10. Driver must have racing seat in car.
11. Must have minimum 2-pound fire extinguisher with a gauge and a quick release mounted securely in car within reach of driver while belted in car.
12. Car must have (4) point roll cage with diagonal bar behind driver with (3) roll bars in left door & (2) in right side door minimum.
A. Top of roll cage may extend to rear frame behind fuel cell.
B. Roll bars must be 1 3/4 inch diameter and .090 tubing. Gussets required in left door bars. bars must be padded in driver’s area (legs & head bars & side bars).
C. Front hoop bar must not extend past radiator support.
14. Rear view mirror allowed.
15. Left side window net is required. Must have a quick release from the top.
16. May run solid engine and transmission mounts.
17. No plastic oil pressure lines - Metal only.
18. Fuel cell required, 22-gallon maximum. Must be mounted in a safe and approved manner, securely strapped by placing two (2) straps long ways and two (2) straps crosswise around tank and bolting straps to trunk floor. Straps 1/8 inch x 1-inch thickness in width. Must be mounted in center. Bar protecting fuel cell must be no lower than 1 inch below fuel cell. Bottom of fuel cell must be no lower than 8 inches from ground. Mounting must be approved by the HS track official.
A. Must have rollover check valve.
B. Must run Huntsville Speedway fuel. No fuel additives allowed.
19. All wheels must have four working brakes. Brakes are to be single piston caliper Stock style. No Aluminum.

Engine
1. Stock type 2 or 4 eyebrow flat top or dish pistons (cast, forged pistons or hypereutectic pistons).
2. Solid or hydraulic lifters allowed. No mushroom lifters allowed. No roller cam/lifter allowed.
3. Stock cast-iron head as available from manufacturer (Dart S/R head allowed). No porting or polishing. 64cc (+/- 1cc) valve sizes (1.94 and 1.50 allowed for Chevrolet). Chrysler, Fords stock size valves only. Screw-in studs and guide plates allowed. Valve seats: Three-angle cut on valve seats will be permitted. The third angle of a three-angle valve job cannot exceed ½ of an inch below valve seat. Ford: see official for cylinder head cc size.
4. Aluminum or cast iron intakes allowed. (No porting or polishing).
5. Crankshaft height 12 inches.
6. Only one non-adjustable one-piece solid aluminum carburetor spacer permitted maximum ¾” in height, with one paper gasket per side not to exceed .065” in thickness. Spacer must have two holes with openings cut perpendicular, matching carburetor base. No taper or beveling permitted.
7. No angle plug heads. Ford and Chrysler see official.
8. Headers may be run with a Holley 500 cfm# 4412. (No modifications allowed). Down draft header only. No crossover, no 180-degree headers.
9. Quadrajet carburetor will be allowed as long as it is accompanied by stock manifolds, and a 100 lbs. weight penalty.
10. Full roller rocker arms allowed. Stud girdles allowed.
11. Stock automatic transmissions are allowed as long as all gears are working and torque converter is functional.
12. Must have approved safety bell housing. No aluminum bell housing.
13. Stock production type rear-ends. Locked rear-ends are permitted. 9” Fords are permitted. Upper rear control arms may be altered. Floater hubs are permitted. Panhard bars and rear sway bars allowed.
14. Aftermarket top links allowed. Can not be any longer than 18” measuring from center to center.
15. Rear end brackets on frame side must remain in stock location, brackets on rear end allowed a maximum of 2” slot.
16. Must have stock ignition. No dual points or racing ignition (No MSD dist.).
17. Number one spark plug must either be lined up with or in front of left side upper ball joint. If the motor is setback is further than this rule states the car is required to bolt fifty pounds in front of the flywheel. No more than 4” setback will be allowed.
18. On non-crate engine, cold air boxes are not permitted.

Clutch
1. Transmissions must have at least two working forward and one working reverse gear.
2. Clutches may be of the racing type but may not be any smaller in diameter than a 7 and ¼ inches.
