Billy Melvin is Victorious of the 15-car Late Model Race; Bradley Carter Gives a Flawless Performance in the Open Wheel Race; Christopher Willis Takes the Win in the Baby Grands

FAST TIME QUALIFIERS

In qualifying, Ronnie Binkley (14.700) in the Baby Grands, Todd Cagle (15.447) in the Super Stock, John Thomas (13,881) in the Modified, and Billy Melvin (13.892) in the Late Models were the fast time qualifiers of the night.

LATE MODEL

In the 15-car field, Billy Melvin (13.892) in the number 145 captured the fast time award in the Open Wheel division, he rolled a three on inversion.

The race saw two failed attempts before the official start. During the first attempt, the number 2 of Jaxon Bishop jumped the start before the flagman waved the green flag. On the second start the number 11 of JoJo Wilkinson spun out. When we finally were able to get underway, the number 07 of Austin Aker was able to capture the lead followed by Billy Melvin. Bishop settled back in third. On lap 18 the number 12 of Canon Cochran spun during the aggressive battle between the number 19 of Larry Ardry and Wilkinson. The race was showing a reoccurring event, failed restart attempts. The second failed attempt resulted in a major pile-up. The track was clean and we were able to continue, but it would be a short green flag run, Wilkinson spun on lap 21. The continuous theme of failed restarts went in to play again and we had two failed attempts of the restart. Bishop retired to the pits after the second failed attempt and never returned. On the start contact was made between the number 145, number 07, and the number 05 of Nathan Davis. All drivers kept it straight, and the contact allowed the number 145 of Billy Melvin to capture the lead. The three drivers would remain in constant battle and on lap 32 a spin by Wilkinson resulted in a caution. When the race went back green Billy Melvin continued to dominant and brought home the victory. Austin Aker was able to finished second after battling with Nathan Davis. Edwin Gurley finished fourth, and JoJo Wilkinson finished fifth.

MODIFIED

In qualifying, John Thomas (13.881) set a blistering lap and won the fast time qualifying award in the Modified Division. He rolled a four on inversion.

Johnny Brazier in the number 71 showed dominance as he captured the lead, followed by the number 23 of Bradley Carter. As the field was settling into the 50-lap race, John Thomas in the number 47 began passing the number 51 of Phillip Price on the outside on lap 7. A caution fell on lap 10 when the number 85 of Jason Davis spun, collecting the number 68 of Barry Martin. The number 12 of Justin Bonnett also spun to avoid the collision. All drivers were able to continue. Coming back to the green, Bradley Carter takes the lead from Johnny Brazier. Throughout the field battles were heating up. A battle for fifth between Price and the number 25 of Kyle Moore was brewing, until lap 25 when Moore’s pace slowed and he retired to the pits. On lap 34, John Thomas began working on the outside of Brazier and he was able to complete the pass for second. As the battles were subsided, Troy Gray in the number 74 spins on lap 42 resulting in a caution. On the restart Phillip Price made an aggressive move and was able to capture third place from Brazier. John Thomas made outstanding efforts to battle with Carter, but it would be Bradley Carter that took home the win. John Thomas finished second, followed by Phillip Price, Johnny Brazier, and Barry Martin.

SUPER STOCK

In qualifying, Todd Cagle (15.447) was the fast time qualifier, he rolled a two on inversion.

Brandon Walker in the number 18 was able to start alongside Todd Cagle on the front row. Todd Cagle skyrocketed to the lead, but Walker never left his bumper. Chris Evans in the number 19 began battling against the number 29 of Junior Jordan and contact was made between the two. Jordan got loose and it allowed Evans followed by the number 2 of David Dean, Jr to make the pass. Todd Cagle set a blistering pace and captured the victory. Brandon Walker came home second, followed by Austin Evans, David Dean, Jr., and Junior Jordan. Shane Jones came home sixth in his debut in the number 92 Super Stock.

BABY GRANDS

Ronnie Binkley (14.700) in the number 25 was the fast time award winner, he rolled a four on inversion.

After the inversion, the number 15 of Joseph McCloud and the number 24 of Justin Shanes started on the front row. Their first and second place positions was short-lived as Christopher Willis in the number 08 and, the fast time ward winner, Ronnie Binkley captured the first and second places. As the two lead cars of Binkley and Willis battled a caution flew for a spin by McCloud. When we went back green Willis was able to keep the lead with Binkley close by. McCloud was noticeably making his way through the field. McCloud made his way back to fourth. Christopher Willis was able to capture the victory, followed by Ronnie Binkley, Justin Shanes, Joseph McCloud, and the number 00 of Tim Gresham.

MINI MODIFIED

In the Mini Modified division, in his return to Huntsville Speedway, Tommy Robinett in the number 9 captured the lead on the first lap of the race. The field spaced itself out, but the 5A of Alex Campbell began passing cars after starting in the rear and made it to fourth. Tommy Robinett began setting a blistering pace as he began lapping cars. Robinett ran a flawless race and captured the win. Austin Franklin in the number 8 finished second, followed by Doug Emerson in the number 5, Alex Campbell in the 5A, and Eddie Dodd in the number 81 rounded out the top five.

PRO BUZZ

In the Pro Buzz division, Matthew Robbins in the number 36 started on the pole position, alongside Courtney Gibbs in the number 99. Robbins captured the lead early and established distance between the field and himself. Shane Jones in the number 192 made his way to second after starting in the rear and set his sights on Robbins. Jones’s efforts came up short and Robbins made his return to victory lane. Although Robbins won the race, all eyes were on the number 84 of Floyd Brown as he became the 2017 Pro Buzz Champion. Shane Jones came home second, followed by Floyd Brown, Courtney Gibbs, and Charlie Melvin in the number 64.

AMATEUR BUZZ

In the Amateur Buzz division, Kassey Rogers in the number 18 took an early lead and never looked back. Jaclyn Barnett in the number 17 and Michael Forsythe in the number 107 had an aggressive battle brewing throughout the race and made contact numerous times. It would be Jaclyn Barnett who came home second, followed by Michael Forsythe, Joshua Ross in the number 15, and Danny Mason in the number 14.

 

HOT SHOT

In the Hot Shot division, the number 15 of Allen Gunter and the number 00 of Jeremy Price were starting on the front row. The first attempt of the green flag was waved off after the 00 jumped the start before the flagman waved the green flag. Jamie Bradford in the number 46, who was able to start in the second position after the 00 retired to the pits due to mechanical issues, made his way to the lead. Josh McElhone in the number 01, who started in the rear after his victory last Saturday, made his way to second. Gunter and the number 02 of Andrew Whitaker battled for third place. The battle grew more intense and contact was made between the two causing Gunter to spin. Whitaker took the opportunity to use the sportsmanship rule, allowing Gunter to have his position back. When we went back green, Bradford kept the lead and went on to win the race. Josh McElhone finished second, Andrew Whitaker finished third after making a late pass on Gunter.
